Meet Our President For 2002 - Douglas Nichols
The current president
of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers' Association, Douglas Nichols,
has enjoyed a long association with the NSFGA and the apple
industry. In the past he has served the NSFGA as chair of
the Orchard Tour, Storage and Marketing, Annual Meeting,
and Grower Processor committees. He is also a past chair
of the Nova Scotia Tree Fruit Research Foundation. In 1998
he received the Golden Apple Award for best young grower's
contribution to the apple industry.
Douglas Nichols
and his wife, Marlene Wilson-Nichols, have owned and operated
Apple Lane Farm in Morristown, Nova Scotia, since 1987.
The farm has been in the Nichols family since 1930, through
four generations. In addition to 85 acres of apple orchard,
Apple Lane Farm has four acres of pears and a feeder hog
operation with 1,000 animals.
Always active
in the promotion and improvement of the apple industry in
Nova Scotia, Mr. Nichols has taken part in numerous testing
and experimental programs, including high-density orchard
systems, thinning trials, studies in Integrated Pest Management
Technology, rootstock comparison trials, new variety planting,
soil testing studies, and alternative weed control methods.
Mr. Nichols holds
a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Science (Horticulture)
from the University of Guelph. Douglas and Marlene have
four children, Robert, Allyson, Elaine and Elizabeth.
