Cider and Juice

Why pick pure apple juice?

Apple juice is a favourite drink of many people - young and old. However, not all juice is produced the same way. Apple juice labelled 'pure' contains only freshly pressed apple juice and Vitamin C. Juice labelled 'from concentrate' has had the water removed from the juice and then added back at a later time. The only brands of juice that can be labelled 'pure' are those containing juice made freshly pressed apples. By looking for apple juice marked 'pure' or 'not from concentrate,' you're ensuring your family gets the freshest apple juice available. You can support Nova Scotia apple growers and processors by purchasing 'pure' apple juice made in Nova Scotia, because all 'pure' apple juice produced in Nova Scotia is made from locally grown apples.

Try a sip of cider!
Apple cider is a tasty and refreshing drink made by pressing fresh apples. There is nothing added and nothing taken away, which makes for a completely natural drink. It's healthy too! Cider is free of fat and cholesterol and provides nutrients such as potassium and vitamin C. It also contains the soluble fibre pectin, which studies have shown can contribute to lowering blood cholesterol levels.

What makes cider so unique is the special blend of apples used by the cider makers. Each presser will use his or her own blend of apple varieties in different combinations to maximize taste and flavour. A blend will usually be composed of two to five varieties, depending on the season and the apples available. Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, Golden Russet and Jonagold are some of the more popular varieties; however, the varieties are only limited by the cider maker's creativity.

How about some vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar is another popular apple product, and it's also a healthy source of vitamins and minerals. Apple cider vinegar contains numerous minerals, including potassium, phosphorus, chlorine, sodium, magnesium, calcium, sulphur, iron, fluorine and silicon. In fact, apple cider vinegar contains 93 different components that are beneficial for your health! These various components can benefit your body by helping to:

• Regulate blood pressure
• Improve metabolism
• Promote digestion
• Relieve sore throats and laryngitis
• Relieve arthritis pain
• Fight osteoporosis
